About

The drummer is usually the least well-known member of any band. Yet behind every frontman is the person keeping the beat, and often the music's driving force.

I love the rhythm section. Drummers are underrated and under appreciated. They are the leaders even though they sit at the back. They are a band's foundation. They express the intuitive rhythm we all have inside us, connecting us to our primal instincts. They also display respect and restraint, managing time with intelligence and skill.

My latest book, The Drum Thing, was recently published by Prestel. This book features photographs and in depth interviews with some of the world's leading drummers. Each is photographed in their private rehearsal space - from studios, bedrooms and basements to garages and gardens, allowing me to capture the true essence of their personalities and lifestyles.

I have photographed almost 100 celebrated musicians for the book, drummers who have been the driving force behind the best music of the last 60 years, including Tony Allen, Ginger Baker, Travis Barker, Cindy Blackman, Patrick Carney, Jack DeJohnette, Bryan Devendorf, Sly Dunbar, Steve Gadd, James Gadson, Dave Grohl, Mark Guiliana, Steve Jordan, Jim Keltner, Airto Moreira, Neil Peart, Questlove, Jim Sclavunos, Ringo Starr, Lars Ulrich, Joey Waronker and Jack White.
